THE HISTORIES OF KOSASS

ESTABLISHMENT OF THE COLLEGE

15th February 1982 was a historical moment for UPM (then called Universiti Pertanian Malaysia). It was on that day that the foundations were laid for one of UPM’s future landmarks – the 7th Residential College (KK7). KK7 was originally established to provide accommodations for UPM’s Reserve Officers Training Unit (PALAPES). It officially started operations at precisely 8.00 am, on 8th March 1982. However, it only received its first batch of 650 students on 2nd July 1983. On 4th October 1983, KK7 was inaugurated by Y. Bhg. Dato’ Mohd. Noor Bin Ismail, who, at that time served as the Deputy-Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs and Development for Universiti Pertanian Malaysia. There were six buildings in KK7, which included one administrative building and five residential blocks. These residential blocks have been named after various animals – Rusa (Javan rusa) which symbolizes beauty; Kijang (muntjac) which symbolizes quickness; Seladang (gaur) which symbolizes strength; Napuh (greater mouse-deer) which symbolizes gentleness; and Pelanduk (Javan mouse-deer) which symbolizes intelligence.

NAMING OF THE COLLEGE

On 25th April 1996, the 7th Residential College was officially renamed Kolej Sultan Alaeddin Suleiman Shah (KOSASS) after the late Sultan of Selangor. The naming ceremony was carried out by his grandson, the late Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah. The name of the late sultan was chosen because of his generous contributions to UPM. Indeed, Sultan Alaeddin Sulaiman Shah presided over the opening of the Malayan School of Agriculture (Sekolah Pertanian Malaya), the original incarnation of UPM. This prestigious history, in addition to the continued excellence of KOSASS’s residents, has made KOSASS one of the best residential colleges in UPM.
